Research Title:
Functional intention within “involuntary” movements

Research Abstract:
Access technologies attempt to improve communication for individuals who are cognitively aware yet unable to participate with the surrounding environment. They do this through physical or physiological changes which are linked to the functional intent of the individual. Athetoid Cerebral Palsy (CP) is due to damage in either the cerebellum or the basal ganglia. Damage to these areas results in involuntary movements; generally considered to be non-purposeful movement. Yet, what if amid these movements, there are discernable changes in physical or physiological measures which would indicate an attempt to communicate?

This research will explore the possibility of detecting an indication of preference amid involuntary movements. It is hypothesized that there are indeed discernable changes in biomechanical and physiological signals during movements that are typically dismissed as involuntary. This research aims to provide a better means of communication for individuals lacking established methods of technological access. In turn, greater access to the environment, communication and computer activities may eventually contribute to improved participation for children and youth with severe disabilities.
