Sarah Power

PhD Candidate
Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering
University of Toronto
Advisor: Dr. Tom Chau

E-mail: sarah[dot]power[at]utoronto.ca

Education & Training
Sarah completed a B.Eng in electrical engineering at Memorial University of Newfoundland in May 2006. During her undergraduate education she held a number of coop work terms in the areas of power, instrumentation and controls engineering - mostly in the oil and gas industries of Newfoundland and Alberta. However, having always had an interest in biomedical engineering, and rehabilitation engineering in particular, she decided to pursue graduate work in this field. She received a MASc in electrical/biomedical engineering from the University of Toronto in 2008, and is currently pursuing a PhD in biomedical engineering.

Current Research
Her research interests involve the development of access pathways to enable individuals with severe and multiple disabilities to communicate by unconventional means.  Specifically, her research examines the potential of an optical imaging technology called near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) for use in a safe, reliable brain-computer interface.
