Connecting to the Network from Home
Creating the Network Connection
- Open Control Panel and select “Network and Internet Connections”. Choose the task “Create a connection to the network at your workplace”. (This step differs from operating system to operating system - these instructions are for Windows XP). In the New Connection Wizard, select “Virtual Private Network Connection”.

Step 1 - Choose a company name that will let you recognize the network connection on your computer.

Step 2 - Select the option “Do Not Dial the Initial Connection”

Step 3 - Enter “prismlab.homelinux.com” into Host Name.

Step 4 - For easy access to the network, check the option that creates a shortcut to your desktop, and click “Finish”.
Connecting to the Network
- Double click on the Prismlab network icon on your desktop.
- Enter your network userid and password - you should receive a message that you’ve successfully connected to the network.
- To access your files on the network, open “My Computer” and enter “\\dragon6\userid” into the address bar, where userid = your last name + the first letter of your first name. If this doesn’t work, you will have to enter “\\10.191.148.10\username” instead.
- To access the shared files on the network, open “My Computer” and enter “\\dragon6\prismdrive” (or “\\10.191.148.10\prismdrive”) into the address bar.
- To connect remotely to your work computer, run Remote Desktop Connecction (Start Menu -> Program Files -> Accessories -> Remote Desktop Connection ). Enter the IP address of your work computer (you should know that before you leave the lab), and connect!
